The chief of the prosecution office in Jeju resigned Monday over allegations that he committed a lewd act on the street, the justice ministry said.

Kim Soo-chang, the chief of Jeju District Prosecutors’ Office, has been under a police investigation since last week after he allegedly masturbated in public near his residence on the southern island.

A high school girl witnessed and filed the lewd act of the 52-year-old prosecutor to police at around midnight on Wednesday.

Police say Kim refused to identify himself and denied the allegations during questioning.

“Kim offered to step down from the post earlier in the day, and we accepted the offer,” the ministry said.

The ministry noted that it is inappropriate for him to assume his duty while under investigation, though the case is not directly related to his duty as a law enforcer.

“Accepting the offer is intended to boost the fairness and credibility of the ongoing investigation,” the ministry added.

The National Institute for Scientific Investigation is analyzing footage from three closed-circuit television cameras near the scene. The results of the analysis are expected to come out on Wednesday.

Kim claims that he is innocent and was mistaken for someone else, but the teen witness claims that the masturbating person was not drunk and the facial features and clothes of the suspect match those of him.

Good grief… Korea seems to have a huge problem of selecting high ranking people who are not miscreants.
