Korea’s No. 2 TV network MBC said Friday that it plans a sequel to the blockbuster epic TV mini-series “Jewel in the Palace (Daejanggeum) ” for release as early as as the first half of 2015. The drama is considered to have triggered the latest Korean Wave boom in China and Asia.
“We’re planning to make ‘Daejanggeum’ Season 2,” MBC President Kim Jong-guk said in his opening speech at a cultural contents forum in Seoul. “We’ll push for the production in the first half of 2015 after a year of pre-production.”
Starring A-list actress Lee Young-ae, the original series was aired in 2003-04 and told of an orphaned kitchen helper who went on to become the first female physician for the king. The show drew 46.2 percent of viewers in Korea and was later exported to about 90 countries, heightening the popularity of Korean pop culture abroad.
“I think a TV series about a character who succeeds by overcoming all difficulties casts a message of hope to the people all over the world,” Kim said in the MBC-hosted forum, adding that he hopes the sequel can be made soon.
