Is Google Having Unfair Advantage in Adult Market by Being Evil?

Google has become Korean mobile phone users’ favorite choice for finding porn and adult content sites, according to a recent survey of 60,000 Android users.

The survey found that more than nine out of 10 porn-related mobile searches, or 91.2 percent, are carried out on Google, whereas Naver and Daum, the country’s two of the largest portal sites, only account for 8.6 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.

The survey was jointly carried out by the DongA Ilbo and Rankey.com from January through June this year.

Google holds only a 9.1 percent of the country’s search engine market share, lagging far behind Naver and Daum, according to the DongA Ilbo.

Korea is one of the few countries, if not the only one, where Google has failed to be a dominant player in the search-engine market.

The local daily argues that Google’s “remarkable” performance in adult content searches can be attributed to the U.S. tech giant’s lack of willingness to live up to its motto, “Don’t be Evil.”

“Naver not only has its own filtering system, but also hires some 400 staff members to monitor and remove obscene materials,” the DongA ilbo pointed out.

The paper argued that Google’s filtering system is practically useless against prostitution-related keywords, such as 키스방 (Kissing Room) and 안마방 (Massage Parlor).

Some observers say Google and Youtube are unfairly competing with local players as the latter are more strictly monitored and regulated by government authorities.

Jas ****:
Is this country a temple or a secular state??

whg****:  We should block it unless they fix it. What is the government doing? We should learn from China.

Vel****:  Ah…  I should also switch to Google. Lol. Thanks for the good information.

Myu****: Children were exposed to adult content even decades ago in different formats as books or videos. The grown ups all secretly watched them when they were a child.

raf****:  Fxxx you. Enough is enough. Are you gonna turn the entire country as a monastery.

Koh****:   Do you think you can regulate it by making regulations? Would criminals disappear if you make anticrime laws? You cannot stop it by stopping it. You should leave it to each individual’s consciousness and integrity.
