A Busan National University professor jumped to his death from a campus building Monday in an apparent suicide attempt, a university official said.
Ko Hyun-chul, a Korean literature professor, plunged from the fourth floor of the university headquarters around 3 p.m., said Seo Jin-joo, a university spokeswoman.
Ko was transfered to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.
She said Ko scattered papers before jumping from the building that read he was “willing to make a sacrifice for a true democracy.”
She said Ko was opposed to the university’s plan to switch to an indirect system to select its president. So far, professors have selected the head through a vote.
A nurse at the emergency room of a hospital where Ko was being treated declined to discuss Ko’s condition, citing confidentiality.
Repeated calls to police seeking comment went unanswered.
