GWANGJU  — A mother and her eight-year-old daughter survived a six-story fall from their apartment building in an apparent suicide attempt as two men caught them, police said Wednesday.

The 36-year-old woman jumped from the balcony of her apartment Tuesday night holding her daughter to her chest after screaming for help for about 10 minutes on the balcony.

The two men, surnamed Hong and Kim, leaped into action and caught them in their arms before they hit the ground outside the apartment building in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, they said.

The four are being treated for non life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital, according to the Gwangju Police Station.

“We are still looking into whether the mother attempted to commit suicide,” said Kang Seong-bok, a lead investigator into the case. “She is still intoxicated.”
Kang said police will continue an investigation into details of the incident and soon bring in the mother for questioning.

The mother was not immediately available for comment.
