Non-affirming Christian groups are circulating a text message requesting support for a protest against the opening ceremony of the Queer Cultural Festival to show the world how “moral” Korea is.
“By filling Chunggye Square and the pedestrian way with protestors we show our Korean morals to the world,“ Professor Gil Won-Pyoung said in text message that he is encouraging people to circulate on Kakao, Facebook and other social media channels.
“We have a duty as Koreans to do our utmost best to show our morals, as Korea is the only country to prevent the trending flow of homosexuality,” he said.
The Korea Observer translated this message in full for our readers:
This is an emergency message regarding the Queer Cultural Festival, it is not cancelled.
I sent private message because I had to let you know urgently.
There are inaccurate rumors circulating on Kakao and via text message that the Queer Cultural Festival is cancelled due to MERS.
On 9th of June the Queer Cultural Festival is going ahead, please let the other people know.
While some components of the festival are cancelled due to MERS, it is still going ahead.
MERS may spread through the Queer Festival. Homosexuals who have Aids (HIV Positive) do not have an immune system are at high risk of contracting MERS.
Also, homosexuals who have MERS who use the subway will then endanger the public as they may spread the contagious disease.
Take your children to Chunggye Square and provide the right values regarding homosexuality.
If you want to go to the Queer Festival on 9th of June do not go to Seoul Square, go across the pedestrian walkway to the other side of the road and wear a mask marked with an X to silently (individually) protest against the homosexuals.
If there is conflict, react non-violently and shout to the other people to refrain from violence so other people will support you.
By filling Chunggye Square and the pedestrian way with protestors we show our Korean morals to the world.
We have a duty as Koreans to do our utmost best to show our morals, as Korea is the only country to prevent the trending flow of homosexuality.
Please deliver this message to devoted people in Korea.
Professor Gil Won-Pyoung
LGBT activist Heezy Yang said Professor Gil’s message is ridiculous.
“They don’t even define super virus and they are just trying to make people fear homosexuals for no reason under the name of god,” he said.
Heezy is so unhappy with the non-affirming Christian groups and police that he created a poster of a male police officer intimately kissing a pastor on the lips.
“Obviously I’m expressing my feelings and opinions towards the extremist Christians and Seoul police pretty directly in the poster. Frustration and anger,” Heezy said.
Heezy said that non-affirming Christians are trying to stop the Queer Cultural Festival.
“The capture of the post says they’re trying to stop the opening ceremony which now will now be broadcast by YouTube live streaming due to the MERS situation.”
The Queer Cultural Festival Opening Ceremony is scheduled for June 9 at Seoul plaza.
“Participants, however, will take part in the opening ceremony not by gathering on the Seoul City Hall Square, but by watching the live broadcast online via Youtube,” said the Queer Cultural Festival Organising Committee in a press release.
“Please be with us online watching the 16th KQCF opening ceremony,” they state.
However, several expats are still keen to show up at Seoul Plaza to support the event and the LGBT community.
“There will still be some of us going to the Plaza,” Craig Bartlertt said – a straight expat who is an ally of the Korea LGBTQ community. “Don’t be afraid to come out,” he added.
